Paid Maternity Leave: Is America Behind?

By this point, most of you are aware that I’m pro-human. To me, that means that we should support humanity – starting prior to birth (yes, I stand with Planned Parenthood), right through childhood and into old age. I’m talking about Women’s health, gun control, food stamps, and helping out where ever we can. America is one of the richest countries on the planet. We can afford to spend a little extra time with our children at home, and we should support parents who would like to do that. And yet paid maternity leave keeps getting left off the politician’s agendas. We need to bring it back to the forefront – and get in line with many companies that are instituting paid maternity leave. I’ve written about it today for Sammiches and Psych Meds. Pop over and have a look!

  1. I could be wrong, but I believe Pat Buchanan had something to do with it back around the 70’s. Another one of those, we had it, but a politician got his pockets lined and got rid of it things.

  2. wow! i was going to say that I got paid maternity leave. but I live in CA. I didn’t realize only three states in the union mandated it. wow! I guess I was really lucky…

  3. Those statistics are amazing. I had no idea that the U.S. was the only developed country to not have paid maternity leave. I can’t imagine having to go through choosing to be able to spend quality and necessary time with a newborn or having to go immediately back to work in order to be able to pay the bills. I didn’t even realize that there wasn’t paid maternity leave until recently seeing a couple of my co-workers having children.

The stats are startling. The US is such a rich country – I don’t understand why we can’t afford to. As far as I can see, we can’t afford not to!
